Incineration System Improvements
MCES
St. Paul, MN
The Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES) operates the
Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant, which services a
substantial number of residents in St. Paul and Minneapolis. One of
the functions of the plant is to incinerate dry solids in multiple
hearth furnaces. MCES solicited design build proposals to reduce the
particulate matter emissions from the incinerators in order to
comply with EPA standards, and also to reduce maintenance
requirements. Alltech Engineering Corp. was awarded the contract for
this work.
The project consisted of designing and installing isolation gate
dampers for the incinerators. There were six open-hearth
incinerators that required modification. It was necessary to keep at
least four of the incinerators in operation at all times during
construction for the plant to maintain production. The existing
incinerators had to be modified to accommodate the new dampers. New
blowers were furnished and installed, and the existing hydraulic
system had to be removed to install a new one. The project also
required a new electrical emergency gate lift system and extensive
refractory work.
The installation passed all testing for conformance with performance
specification, and the project was completed on schedule without
injury, despite extremely adverse working conditions.
